Everything you ever wanted to know about Death In June, but were afraid to ask Version 6.3 (Last revised: August 3, 1994)
put together by Stewart Tame (stame@emunix.emich.edu)
Many thanks to all who’ve helped with this list. I couldn’t have done it without you.
Background: In the beginning–1977 to be precise–there came into existance a band called Crisis. I’ve not heard any of their material myself but judging from song titles it’s probably vintage Sex Pistols-era punk rock. Crisis broke up in 1980. Two members went on to form a band called Theater of Hate. They are not who this discography is about. The other two members, Douglas Pearce and Tony Wakeford, formed Death In June with Patrick Leagas. In 1983, Wakeford left the band to form Sol Invictus. The follwing is from the liner notes to 93 Dead Sunwheels:
“From 1983 to December 1984, Death In June consisted of Douglas P. (vocals, guitar, drums, keyboards), Patrick Leagas (vocals, drums, drum machine, keyboards, trumpet) and Richard Butler (keyboards). …Richard Butler departed the group in December 1984, Patrick Leagas departed the group shortly after the release of Nada!, in May 1985.” Since then, DIJ has been Pearce and numerous collaborators. I’m informed that Simon Norris, who has been with Douglas since ’91, will stay on as a member. DIJ is loosely affiliated with Current 93, Sol Invictus, Strawberry Switchblade, Sixth Comm, Coil and probably a dozen or so other really cool bands. They seem to trade off members whenever they need the extra players. Though the possibility is probably remote, it would be one hell of a great concert if all these bands went on a tour together.
Musically, DIJ are similar to Current 93, Sol Invictus and Sixth Comm. Their earlier material is remniscent of Joy Division, though their later work leans more toward acoustic guitar and percussion. If you like your music dark, rhythmic, and moody, DIJ are definitely worth checking out. Among the members of other bands who’ve worked on DIJ projects are:
David Tibet of Current 93 Rose McDowall of Strawberry Switchblade, as well as the recent Sorrow release John Balance of Coil Tony Wakeford of Sol Invictus, as well as a recent solo album Boyd Rice who has recorded both as himself and as Non Patrick Leagas O’Kill of Sixth Comm/Mother Destruction Andrea James of Somewhere in Europe Gary Carey of The Joy of Life Richard Butler of The Joy of Life Ian Reed of Sol Invictus and Fire & Ice
I. ALBUMS & SINGLES
1985???:
I’ve learned of a 10″ bootleg with Dogs Blood Order/Current 93/ Death In June on it. DIJ have only one track, a live version of “Fields of Rape.” Anyone know anything more about this?
1980 – 1984:
Between 1980 and 1984, EYAS Media released eight cassette tapes of the band’s music. These are supposedly very rare. Certainly I’ve never seen one myself. The order of release is unknown and I only have a track listing for one of them. Any further information would be appreciated. Amsterdam – Cassette tape, EYAS Media, live recording
Archive – Cassette tape, EYAS Media, live recording Packaging: Plain white card with black skull in diamond logo. Blue slip inside with track listing. Tape is ordinary TDK C60 with handwritten labels. Track Listing (exactly as printed): “Pre Death In June 1980 (Wakeford.Leagas.Butler) 1. Speeches, Death In June 1981 (Wakeford.Pearce.Leagas) 2. IV. DEATH IN JUNE ON VIDEO
Death In June: Live In Amiens, France 11/9/91 This video is almost certainly a bootleg. There is no production company or even a copyright notice listed anywhere. The sound quality is a little raggedy at first, as is the video, but it soon smooths out–though it never becomes what I’d call “great.” I really don’t know what any of these people look like so it’s hard to say who the personnel were for the concert. Obviously Douglas is present and I recognize David Tibet by his voice. Anyone else who has this tape (or who lives close enough to stop over and watch it) who can identify the rest? There is also one song that I don’t recognize at all. Can anyone help me out?
Track Listing: 1. Fall Apart 2. Death of a Man 3. Heaven Street 4. Torture By Roses 5. Break the Black Ice 6. Come Before Christ and Murder Love 7. To Drown a Rose 8. Bring In the Night 9. ???? 10. Fall Apart 11. Coal Black Smith (a Current 93 song, Tibet on vocals)
